1. Foundation: A solid start on the uncertainty of the soil
The success of a tall building depends on a strong foundation, which is the most invisible but crucial part of the construction process.
- Soil Investigation: The first important step is to thoroughly drill and analyze the soil properties to determine the bearing layer. This information will then guide the selection of the appropriate foundation type.
- Foundation Design: For multi-storey buildings, bored piles or large driven piles of precisely calculated length and size are often used to transfer the entire weight of the building to the deeper, solid soil layer.
- Pile Testing: A pile load test is performed to confirm that the foundation is stable and safe as per the engineering design.
2. Structure and resistance to external forces
The structure of a multi-story building is not only designed to support the weight of the building itself, but also to withstand the strong forces of nature.
- Structural Selection: Reinforced Concrete structures are most commonly used because they are strong, fire-resistant, and provide good vibration damping. Lateral Load Resisting Systems, such as Shear Walls, are often added.
